Original 1917 photograph of the S.S. Lurline of the Matson Navigation Company.This is the earlier 1908-built Lurline, a Matson passenger-and-cargo steamship operating in Pacific service from San Francisco, decades before the better-known luxury liner of the same name.Period handwriting on the reverse identifies the vessel as “Lurline” and appears to read:“Lurline – outbound San Francisco” “taken during war – June 24 1917” “in war dress”The photograph was taken during World War I, shortly after the United States entered the war. The 1908 Lurline later served under the United States Shipping Board during WWI, while Matson records note that most of the company’s fleet was requisitioned for troop and military cargo service.Approx. 4.5 x 2.75 inches.Original period photograph, not a modern reproduction.
