1917 ad war workers needed in Atlanta, GeorgiaThis is a single newspaper sheet with a large, rare advertisement for hiring workers for a munitions plant in Atlanta during World War I. It appeared in the Oct. 14, 1917, issue of Hearst\'s Sunday American. It is over 100 years old.The overall page is 18x21 inches in size, with the ad occupying the bottom half, measuring 11x18 inches. It was printed on pulp newsprint paper, but is in very good condition, with some light age browning. It will be shipped folded once, as originally distributed.Placed by the American Machine & Mfg. Co. on Ashby St., near Marietta St., it offers employment to 1,000 men manufacture shells which would be used in the War, but assures prospective workers that it doesn\'t involve explosives which would threaten personal danger. It says the jobs are “A splendid opportunity for patriotic work for men who have not been called for other service” in the war.The item will be accompanied by a small (5\") newspaper clipping related to the ad, which has the headline, “Munition Plant Here Seeks Men — American Machine Company to Make Shells and Gun Mounts for United States.” This notes that the contract received by the Atlanta company from the Government will involve a weekly payroll of over $50,000. The story says, “. . . and the company has declared its intention, if possible, of employing only Georgia workmen,” and that its plant was being arranged so that it can be converted to civilian commercial purposes after the war.[p11269]_gsrx_vers_1836 (GS 10.1 (1836))
