Original World War I-era real photo postcard showing American troops embarking for home at Pauillac, France, dated 1919.
The negative caption on the image reads approximately:
“Troops Embarking for Home / Pauillac, France / © 1919 / J.T. Thomas”
The image shows a large group of soldiers gathered on a pier or dockside railway area, many carrying packs and bags as they prepare to leave France after the end of World War I. A small rail or dockside engine is visible near the center, with tracks running along the pier and a long line of troops extending into the distance. The scene documents the large-scale return movement of American Expeditionary Forces following the war.
Pauillac, located near Bordeaux, served as an important embarkation point for troops returning to the United States after hostilities ended. The view includes soldiers, baggage, rail tracks, dock activity, and details of the transportation infrastructure used during demobilization.
The reverse has an AZO real photo postcard stamp box, consistent with the World War I and immediate post-war period, and the card is unused.
Condition:
Original real photo postcard with age toning, light soiling, fading and lightness to the image, and general handling wear. The image remains readable, though it is light in areas, especially toward the upper and right portions. Please review photos carefully for condition.
