Original January 9, 1934 War Department correspondence on official WAR DEPARTMENT – WASHINGTON letterhead, signed by George H. Dern, who served as United States Secretary of War under President Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933 until his death in 1936.

The letter is addressed to R. L. Olson of Ogden, Utah, whom Dern familiarly addresses as “Dear Ray.” Dern apologizes that circumstances prevented the two men from having a visit while Olson was in Washington, noting how busy he had been and expressing hope that Olson would return for “a real old-time visit.”

Of particular interest, Dern closes the substantive portion of the letter by stating:

“I shall be glad to keep in mind your suggestion regarding the recommendation of Harry Hall.”

The letter provides an interesting glimpse into the personal and political correspondence of a sitting Cabinet secretary during the first year of the Roosevelt administration.

Dern was a prominent Utah Democrat, serving as Governor of Utah from 1925 to 1933 before Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him Secretary of War. His tenure coincided with the early New Deal period and major developments in the organization and modernization of the U.S. Army.

Signed “Geo. H. Dern” above the typed designation Secretary of War.

Measures approximately 8.5 x 11 inches.
