1936-1937 California Licensed Chauffeur badge #1175
This is not a police badge - it's a commercial driver's license badge. From about 1915 to the late 1930s, California (and many other states) required professional drivers - chauffeurs, taxi drivers, truck drivers, bus drivers - to be licensed separately and to wear a numbered metal shield pin while on duty.
Shield shape with "1936-1937 CHAUFFEUR 1175 CALIFORNIA" • Maker: HENRY MOSS & CO. on the back - a New York badge maker who made a huge number of California chauffeur badges in the 1930s. The back you photographed shows the typical oval maker plate and pin-back fastener. • Material: Silver-plated bronze / nickel silver - standard for that period • Low number: 1175 is a relatively low issue number, which collectors like. Good condition
