Original 1943 correspondence between Max Englander of The Englander Company, Inc., 100 West 32nd Street, New York, and Lt. William A. Taylor, Supply Corps, U.S. Navy, then with the Navy Purchasing Office in Chicago (Field Building, 135 South LaSalle; later 844 N. Rush). These are personal letters, not circulars. Several are signed by Max Englander. Taylor’s replies are carbon copies, some on Navy Purchasing Office letterhead.
Included:- June 3, 1943, Englander to Taylor (2 pages, signed). Hospital beds from the Brooklyn plant, a visit to the Navy Medical Depot in Brooklyn, and a pitch for comber-cotton pillows over chicken-feather pillows. Mr. Stueber and Lt. Gualt are named.- June 9, 1943, Taylor to Englander. Chicago office still getting organized; expects to buy the same type of items bought in New York.- June 11, 1943, Englander to Taylor (signed). Says the firm had just received Navy specifications for 30,000 felt mattresses, 15,000 innerspring mattresses, 15,000 convertible angle cots, and 20,000 hospital beds, with most of those offers opening the next week. Also names Mr. Grossberg, Lt. James, and Lt. Searing.- June 22, 1943, Taylor to Englander. New York buying heavily in the mattress and bunk-bed line; mentions the Furniture Show.- July 17, 1943, invitation from A. Langsner, Factory Manager, Eugene Dietzgen Co., 954 Fullerton Avenue, Chicago, asking Lt. and Mrs. W. A. Taylor to the Army-Navy “E” Award ceremony, Thursday, July 22, 1943, 5:30 p.m., Aragon Ballroom, 1100 Lawrence Avenue. Signed. P.S. reserves a seat for Mrs. Taylor.- July 19, 1943, Taylor’s carbon declining the Dietzgen invitation (another engagement on the 22nd) and congratulating the firm. Signed W. A. Taylor, Lieut. (SC) USNR.- October 13, 1943, Taylor to Englander. Now living at 719 Park Avenue, Wilmette. Has met Mr. Pink; small jobs only so far, nothing of any size in bedding.- November 17, 1943, Englander to Taylor at 719 Park, Wilmette (signed). Recovering from a heavy cold; asks after Mrs. Taylor and the baby.- December 14, 1943, Taylor to Englander on Navy Purchasing Office, Field Building, Chicago letterhead (telephone Wabash 2610). Says purchasing of Englander-type merchandise has been limited and they have bought practically nothing in beds and bedding. Mentions Ira Pink, Mr. Grossberg, and a Christmas package.
