    PROVENANCE / HISTORY

This ticket was given to me by a neighbor in the late 1990s. At the time, he told me that he and his aunt had attended the Eisenhower inauguration parade. He has since passed away, so this personal history cannot be independently documented. We are sharing it as the history that was told to us when the ticket was given to us.

    1953 INAUGURAL PARADE TRIVIA

The Eisenhower inaugural parade was an extraordinary event:

    • Approximately 750,000 spectators watched the parade.
    • The parade lasted an astonishing 4 hours and 39 minutes.
    • It included 50 state and organization floats, 65 musical units, 350 horses, three elephants, an Alaskan dog team and a 280-millimeter atomic cannon.
    • Eisenhower and Mamie Eisenhower rode together in a white Cadillac with the top down.
    • Famous cowboy trick roper Montie Montana rode past the reviewing stand and famously lassoed President Eisenhower, with Eisenhower\'s permission.
    • Eisenhower had a remarkable connection to an earlier inauguration: as a West Point cadet, he marched in Woodrow Wilson\'s 1913 inaugural parade.
