Original three-page handwritten letter dated April 24–25, 1967, written from Bremerhaven, Germany, by Bob and Ginny Carter to Bob\'s mother in Oklahoma City.

A fascinating firsthand account of an American couple preparing to leave Germany and return to the United States by ocean liner during the Cold War era.

Bob describes their final days in Germany, including farewell dinners, gatherings with friends, and their departure from the Von Steuben, where they had been staying.

Interesting historical details include:

  • Traveling north on Germany\'s Autobahn, with snow flurries and sunshine along the way.

  • Staying at the Von Steuben and enjoying farewell gatherings with friends and colleagues.

  • A visit to the village of Opladen, where they toured a school, Düsseldorf, and Wuppertal, including a visit to an overhead railway memorial.

  • Preparing for their transatlantic voyage, with 19 pieces of luggage and parcels packed and tagged.

  • Being assigned Cabin 53 on the main deck, complete with a porthole.

  • Watching the ship arrive in Bremerhaven and preparing to board for the voyage to America.

  • Descriptions of elaborate farewell breakfasts, dinners, and social gatherings.

The letter also provides an interesting glimpse into everyday life and family relationships in the 1960s, including Bob\'s instructions to his mother concerning the family home and financial matters.

The final entry, written April 25 at 5:40 a.m., describes the couple preparing to board their ship. Bob mentions taking photographs of the vessel at the dock and hopes to telephone home during the crossing.

Includes the original red, white, and blue airmail envelope with an April 25, 1967, Army & Air Force Postal Service cancellation.

An interesting piece of Cold War-era American history, documenting overseas life, travel in West Germany, and transatlantic passenger ship travel during the 1960s.
