This is an especially interesting BYU yearbook because it captures the university during a memorable period in its history—one that included Jim McMahon\'s record-setting final season at BYU, the emergence of Steve Young, another BYU football conference championship, and a second consecutive Holiday Bowl victory.The book also contains an extensive student index, campus organizations and activities, faculty and university leadership, athletics, special events, and hundreds of names and photographs that make it valuable for both BYU collectors and family-history researchers.
“A DAY AT BYU”The editors explain that they deliberately changed the direction of the 1982 Banyan from previous editions.Rather than simply compiling photographs, they wanted to preserve the events that shaped the 1981–82 school year at BYU and organized the yearbook around the experience of passing through “a day at BYU.”Managing Editor Joseph L. Quimby explained that a school year passes so quickly that it can seem like a single day. The staff hoped that as the years passed, the book would become increasingly meaningful as a remembrance of that particular year.The yearbook staff included Jay P. Morgan as Photo Editor, Julene Morgan as Art Director, Lisa Barlow as Copy Editor, S. Parke Stentzel handling public relations and clubs, Sharon Patton as Student Life Editor, Russell Cusano as Sports Editor, and Pam Nielsen and Stephen Gerzeli as Special Events Editors.JIM McMAHON — BYU ATHLETE OF THE YEAROne of the strongest features in this particular yearbook is a full page devoted to quarterback Jim McMahon, identified by the Banyan as:
“BYU Athlete of the Year: Consensus All-American.”The yearbook recounts McMahon\'s remarkable BYU career and notes that he originally came to BYU partly because of its baseball program.His football career soon overshadowed baseball.The Banyan recounts his emergence after quarterback Marc Wilson was injured, his selection as an All-WAC quarterback, his record-setting 1980 season, and BYU\'s extraordinary comeback against SMU in the 1980 Holiday Bowl.The 1981 season produced another chapter.After suffering a knee injury against Colorado, McMahon returned and helped lead BYU to another conference title and a 38–36 victory over Washington State in the Holiday Bowl.The yearbook records that McMahon was named All-WAC for a third time, became a consensus All-American, finished third in Heisman Trophy voting, and received the Davey O\'Brien Award as the nation\'s leading college quarterback.For football collectors, that feature alone makes this more than an ordinary college yearbook.
STEVE YOUNG AT THE BEGINNING OF HIS BYU CAREERThe yearbook also records a name that would become even more famous in the years ahead: Steve Young.When McMahon was injured during the 1981 season, the Banyan notes that sophomore Steve Young started the next two games.The index also identifies Young on multiple pages.That makes this an intriguing yearbook for football history: it captures Jim McMahon near the end of his legendary BYU career and Steve Young near the beginning of his.Both men would later become prominent NFL quarterbacks and Super Bowl champions.
THE 1981 BYU FOOTBALL SEASONThe Banyan devotes substantial coverage to the Cougars\' 1981 season.BYU opened with victories over Long Beach State, Air Force, UTEP and Colorado. After McMahon\'s injury, Steve Young stepped in at quarterback.The Cougars later defeated Utah State, San Diego State, New Mexico, Colorado State and Hawaii before reaching a conference showdown against rival Utah.BYU ultimately captured the WAC championship and defeated Washington State 38–36 in the Holiday Bowl.The football section also includes other recognizable BYU football names, including Val Sikahema and Kyle Whittingham, among many others.

NASAPerhaps the most dramatic technological development was America\'s return to human spaceflight. On April 12, 1981, Space Shuttle Columbia launched on STS-1, inaugurating the Space Shuttle era. Columbia flew again in November 1981 and continued its test-flight program during the 1981–82 school year.
