About This Specimen:

Up for grabs is an absolutely beautiful, 1.4-pound polished display specimen originating from the highly regarded Cox Family Collection. This piece was sourced from the legendary Einstein Silver Mine in the Missouri Ozarks. While most material from this district is kept as rough, rugged ore, the front face of this heavy greisen specimen has been expertly polished. The mirror-like finish acts as a perfect window, beautifully exposing the dark, localized flecks of rare Zinnwaldite mica suspended deep within the dense, glassy intergrowth of massive topaz and quartz. It perfectly highlights the complex structural beauty of Missouri's most famous hydrothermal veins. It is a fantastic, smooth-to-the-touch display piece that bridges the gap between historical pioneer mining and fine lapidary art.

The Geological History (The Einstein Mine & Greisen Deposits):

The Silver Mines District in the St. Francois Mountains represents a unique geological anomaly in the Midwest—it is the state's only historic commercial silver and tungsten deposit. Over 1.4 billion years ago, superheated, volatile-rich magmatic fluids pushed through the local Precambrian granite. These intense fluids chemically altered the host rock into a complex "greisen" deposit, crystallizing massive topaz, heavy quartz, rare Zinnwaldite micas, and heavy metallic ores. The Einstein Mine was the primary focal point of the original 1800s pioneer mining boom. Today, the shafts are completely abandoned, flooded, and strictly off-limits, making verified material from old hoards like the Cox Collection incredibly highly prized by regional mineral collectors.
