ARDHANARISHVARA SHIVA SHAKTI NEWARI PAINTING |ORIGINAL OLD OIL-VARNISHED HAND-PAINTED HIMALAYAN SACRED ART WITH SILK BROCADE
This is an original hand-painted ArdhanarishvaraNewari painting, beautifully mounted with traditional silk brocade and finishedwith an old protective oil varnish. Created by skilled Newar artists of theKathmandu Valley on handmade cotton canvas using natural stone pigments, thisremarkable artwork is a rare example of authentic Himalayan sacred art.
The painting depicts Ardhanarishvara, the divine unionof Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti (Parvati) in a singleform. One half of the deity is Shiva, representing pure consciousness andtranscendental wisdom, while the other half is Shakti, representing creativeenergy, compassion, and the dynamic force of the universe.
Over time, a thin layer of oil varnish was traditionallyapplied to help protect the delicate water-based pigments, enhance durability, and create a warm, rich patina. This gentle aging gives the paintingexceptional depth, character, and an authentic antique appearance.
THE MEANING OF ARDHANARISHVARA
The Sanskritword Ardhanarishvara means "The Lord Who Is HalfWoman."
The image is divided into two perfectly balanced halves:
- Right Side – Lord Shiva: Represents pure consciousness, stillness, detachment, wisdom, and the eternal masculine principle (Purusha).
- Left Side – Goddess Parvati (Shakti): Represents energy, creativity, compassion, fertility, and the dynamic feminine principle (Prakriti).
Together they symbolize:
- Perfect balance of masculine and feminine energies
- Unity of consciousness and creative power
- Harmony between strength and compassion
- The inseparable nature of Shiva and Shakti
- The ultimate wholeness of existence
Ardhanarishvara reminds us that true harmony arises whencomplementary forces exist in perfect balance.
