- First Squadron (1952–1970): Originally established as fighter squadron VF-102 on May 1, 1952, and redesignated as attack squadron VA-36 on July 1, 1955. It was disestablished on August 1, 1970. [1]
- Second Squadron (1987–1994): Re-established as the second VA-36 on March 6, 1987, at NAS Oceana, Virginia, and finally disestablished on April 1, 1994. [1]
- Nickname: The \"Roadrunners,\" featuring an unofficial cartoon logo later adapted into official insignia. [1]
Aircraft Flown
- First Period: Flew the FG-1D Corsair, F9F Panther variants, F9F-8 Cougar, and A-4 Skyhawk variants (A4D/A-4C).
- Second Period: Flew the A-6E Intruder all-weather attack aircraft. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Key Operations
- Vietnam War: Flew early combat missions from the nuclear-powered carrier USS Enterprise in December 1965 and served deployments aboard the USS Intrepid. [1, 2]
- Middle East & Cold War Crises: Participated in the Bay of Pigs alert (1961) and provided air cover for the USS Liberty during the Six-Day War in 1967. [1]
- Modern Operations: Participated in Operation Desert Storm (1991), Operation Provide Comfort (1991), Operation Southern Watch, and Red Sea strikes aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.
