Baotite is a rare barium titanium-niobium silicate; it was first reported from the Bayan Obo deposit, Bayan Obo, Baotou League (Baotou Prefecture), Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China in 1959, and named for the locality. It is found as vitreous, light brown to black, euhedral to subhedral, tetragonal, prismatic crystals, rarely striated. Baotite is commonly associated with quartz, calcite, aegirine, galena, pyrite, alkalic amphiboles, calcite, dolomite, ancylite, aeschynite, monazite, and barite. It is also found as good crystals at Sheep Creek, Mineral Point district, Ravalli Co., Montana, and at the Gem mine, San Benito Co., California, USA. It occurs as exceptional crystals from Zagi Mountain, Hameed Abad Kafoor Dheri, Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan; Sebkovice, Moravia, Czech Republic; Whirligig Torrent, Okuru River, and at Twirligig, Burke River, South Island, New Zealand; Karlstein and Jarolden, Waldviertel region, Austria; Garaoulμere mine, Pierrette, Hautes-Pyrenees, France; and Deadhorse Creek complex, Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada.
