Description: Two antique French candlesticks from the reign of Napoleon III by sculptor Mathurin Moreau.
Constructed of bronze and black marble, this pair encapsulates the spirit of the Second French Empire, when Napoleon III was seeking to recapture the First Empire. His more famous uncle had assumed the trappings and iconography of Ancient Rome to grant his rule a legitimacy that he otherwise would not have had among the crowned heads of Europe who ruled by divine right under Salic law.
This pair features two female figures wearing stolas (women\'s togas) and garlands in their hair as they support six-branched, seven-nozzled candle-holders.
