This wonderful 1870s-1880s American folk art quilt is entirely hand-stitched,with a visually striking geometric composition of horizontal and verticalstrips. The colors, pattern, and artistic use of humble fabric scraps give thesame primitive beauty as in the celebrated African American quilts of Gee’sBend, Alabama.
The patchwork incorporates an assortment of period cotton fabrics, includingindigo prints, Turkey red, double pinks, shirtings, ginghams, plaids, stripes,and small-scale florals. The contrasting colors and varied prints arebeautifully balanced, creating a quilt that is equally appealing as a historictextile and a decorative work of American folk art.
Entirely hand-pieced and hand-quilted, with diagonal quilting stitchesthroughout. The quilt has the wonderfully soft, puckered texture acquiredthrough generations of use and washing.
Dating predominantly to the 1870s, it has undergone extensive hand-sewnrepairs over its long history, possibly incorporating some slightly laterfabrics.
Measures approximately 65 x 75 inches.
Condition:
Freshly laundered and clean and in very good antique condition. There are extensiveolder hand-stitched repairs, including two patches on the plain cotton backing.Some scattered small holes, minor staining, and localized fabric deterioration,particularly along the narrow edge bands. Despite its age and repairs, the quilt remains remarkably attractive andsubstantially intact. Suitable for display, gentle use on a guest bed or as anoutstanding addition to a collection of early American quilts and textiles.
