An exceptional 19th-century European (likely Austrian or German) cast bronze figural desk inkwell. The piece is masterfully sculpted as a grotesque, laughing peasant Woman wearing a traditional bonnet.The hinged bonnet flips back on a perfectly working, original mechanism to reveal the main ink reservoir. Flanking her shoulders are two integral scrolled horn-shaped holders designed to rest dip pens. The underside features a factory-made keyhole-shaped slot, indicating this heavy bust was originally secured to a larger marble or wooden desk stand. It features a wonderful, untouched rich golden-brown aged patina. No maker\'s marks or stamps, which is consistent with fine foundry work of this period.
