This highly collectible early 20th-century doorstop features two English footmen standing shoulder to shoulder in their distinctive red uniforms with gold trim.
It retains attractive original painted surface with honest age-related wear that collectors expect to see on an original example.
The back is correctly impressed 248, and the base bears the Anne Fish signature, identifying this as one of Hubley’s desirable Anne Fish design.
Height: 12 inches
Width: Approximately 8 3/8 inches
Depth: 1 3/4"Weight: Approximately 7 Lbs.
Rarity and Scale ComparisonThe two versions represent the "large" and "small" sizes of the same design concept:
- Model No. 248 (Large Version): This is the extremely rare variant. It stands at a substantial 12 inches tall, weighs roughly 7 pounds, and measures over 8 inches wide. Because far fewer of these large-format footmen were produced by the Hubley Manufacturing Company in the 1920s, it commands a major premium in the antiques market, often valued in the $2,500 – $3,500 range when found with its original factory enamel paint intact.
- Model No. 272 (Small Version): This is the standard version most frequently encountered by collectors. It stands at 9 to 9.5 inches tall and weighs approximately 4 pounds. While still highly desirable because of Anne Harriet Fish's celebrated illustrations for Vanity Fair, its smaller size was mass-produced in much higher quantities. A No. 272 in good, original condition typically trades on platforms like or Etsy for $500 – $1,200.
This is a wonderful opportunity to own one of Hubley’s classic Anne Fish designs that seldom comes to market in original paint.
