Antique dessert or luncheon fork made by Elkington & Co. of Birmingham, England, the firm that commercialized silver electroplating. It was retailed by Barlow & Co., Buenos Aires.
The fork is stamped with Elkington’s lozenge trade mark, “UNPLATED,” “SOLID,” and “BARLOW & Co. BUENOS AIRES.” It is made of solid nickel silver (German silver) and was never plated, so there is no plating to wear through. Flatware like this was made for hotels, clubs and export, and pieces were built for heavy use.
This fork came from my family in Buenos Aires, some of whom were British.
This fork shows the connection between British makers and Argentina in the late 1800s and early 1900s.• Pattern: Old English, four tines• Length: 7 in (17.8 cm)• Weight: 34.3 g• Condition: Good used condition, with light surface scratches from age and use. It is slightly twisted. Please see the photos, which are part of the description.
This fork contains no sterling silver. It is sold as shown.
Ships carefully packed from a smoke-free home.
