A remarkably bright 1905 First Edition combining twelve wonderful full-page color illustrations with one of the most striking pictorial publisher's bindings of the period—color artwork across both the front cover and spine, gilt lettering, and a gilt top edge.
Ascott R. Hope. The Adventures of Punch.Illustrated byStephen Baghot de la Bere. London:Adam and Charles Black, 1905. First Edition.207 pages. Original publisher's pictorial cloth, gilt top edge.
The volume containstwelve full-page illustrations in color, complete, including the color frontispiece. The illustrations bring the traditional Punch story into an exuberant Edwardian picture-book world of comic villains, castles, executions, animals, costumes and adventures. The publisher itself emphasized the illustration program, advertising the book as containing “12 full-page Illustrations in Colour.”
The binding is particularly appealing. The front board carries a large multicolor pictorial scene beneath the gilt title, while the spine has its own wonderfully eccentric pictorial panel featuring Punch and other characters in red, green and black. The combination ofpictorial cloth, gilt lettering, gilt top edge and vivid color platesmakes this as attractive as a decorative antique book as it is an illustrated children's-book collectible.
Stephen Baghot de la Bere (1877–1927) was an English painter and illustrator whose work appeared in books and periodicals; he also illustrated editions ofGulliver's TravelsandDon Quixote. His work is especially well suited toPunch: strongly outlined, theatrical, humorous and intensely colorful. Contemporary publisher advertisements placedThe Adventures of Punchamong A. & C. Black's illustrated books for young readers and specifically advertised its twelve full-page color illustrations.Blackburn Museum
