Fascinating early antique postcard depicting a Christian mission church complex in China, dramatically situated beneath a tall multi-story Chinese pagoda.The handwritten message on the front identifies the scene:“This is a picture of the Church for Chinese Children and is known as a Pagoda or ‘Joss’ House. Only the good children reach the top.”The card offers an unusual glimpse into the Christian missionary movement in China during the late 19th/early 20th century, when American and European missionary organizations established churches, schools and other institutions throughout the country. The juxtaposition of the mission buildings with the towering traditional pagoda makes this an especially interesting historical image.The photograph appears to have been hand tinted/colored, with muted red, yellow and blue coloring applied to portions of the buildings while the landscape and pagoda remain largely monochrome.The reverse features an ornate green border and the early international postal wording:UNION POSTALE
