Balenciaga Spring/Summer 2002 represents an important period in Nicolas Ghesquière's influential work for the historic Paris fashion house.
The collection combined highly modern silhouettes with elaborate artisanal details.
Among its most distinctive elements were patchwork garments created from richly patterned fabrics, loose cargo trousers, fluid draping, pale utilitarian pieces, black tailoring and contrasting metallic details.
The juxtaposition of decorative textiles with deliberately practical shapes created the sophisticated tension between craftsmanship and modernity that became one of the signatures of Ghesquière's Balenciaga.
