This is a used Benchmade 555 Mini Griptilian. Mel Pardue design, AXIS lock, 154CM drop-point, black Valox handles with rubber insert. Butterfly and 555 on the show side. Reverse: 154CM, MEL PARDUE Design, U.S. Patent No. RE41,259. Made in the USA. No box.
A carried EDC, not a collector piece. Handles would clean up. Clip coating is flaked to bare steel.

Condition Notes
Used hard. Scales are soiled in the texture and around the insert — a brush and soap would help. Pocket clip coating is mostly gone; BENCHMADE is still readable on bare steel. Blade has carry scratches and a working edge, not a factory finish. AXIS barrels and hole are intact in the photos. No box. A user Mini Grip. Judge from the pictures. What is pictured is what ships.
Description & History
Les de Asis started Benchmade in Oregon in 1988. The company is now in Oregon City. The AXIS lock — the spring-loaded crossbar in this handle — is the mechanism that made later Benchmade folders the default U.S. EDC. Patent on this blade is RE41,259, the AXIS reissue.
Mel Pardue designed the Griptilian family. The full-size 551 and this 555 Mini Griptilian put a Pardue drop-point and opening hole on a Valox handle that was meant to get dropped and washed. Early Mini Grips shipped in 154CM. Later runs moved to other stainless. This stamp is the 154CM generation.
The 555 is the smaller everyday Grip. Same AXIS, same hole, shorter blade. This example has done the job. Clean the scales if you want it prettier. The lock and steel are why people still carry them.
