Macrocypraea mammoth Author Simone & Cavallari, 2020 Genus Macrocypraea Species mammoth Locality Trinidade Island, off Espirito Santo, Brazil, taken at 12-15m depth, 2009
Grade F++ Size 109.6mm Beautiful, large specimen originally labeled Macrocypraea zebra dissimilis. Later research showed shells from Trindade Island belong to a separate species, now known as Macrocypraea mammoth.
Trindade is a very remote Brazilian island with no permanent population and very limited access. Shells from there were collected a while ago during scientific visits, often before the species was properly understood. Exact collection details for this specimen are unknown; however, it was collected years ago during a scientific visit.
Graded F++ due to some nacre bubbling (visible in the photos). The entire shell retains full gloss - the data is not specific, so the shell may have been live collected, but if not, it was at least very fresh dead collected and is in very good condition.
A very heavy, thick specimen! This species has never before been seen on the market - an exceptional opportunity to fill a gap in your collection!
