The Effect: What The Audience Experiences

You display three common leather key cases. You open each case to reveal a key hanging from a chain, noting that each key is marked with a different colored cap: red, yellow, and green. You place the keys back into their cases, mix them up, and place them on the table. You ask a spectator to try and find the case containing the red key, presenting it as a simple game of chance. Whether they guess right or wrong, you explain that you are going to make it easier for them, and much more difficult for yourself.

You introduce a fourth key case, clearly marked with a silver question mark. You state that this case contains your prediction, and you place it in full view on the table. You put the keys back into their three cases, shuffle them thoroughly, and place them in front of the spectator. You ask them to freely select one case. You pick up their freely chosen case and hand it to them, while you pick up your prediction case.

The spectator opens their selected case, but the key has completely disappeared. Only the empty chain hangs inside. You open the two remaining cases to show their keys are still safely inside. Finally, you open your prediction case—the one marked with the question mark—and the spectator\'s missing key falls out.
