Dark blue transferware.A fine pair of early American historical Staffordshire pottery, comprising a handleless cup and shallow bowl, both decorated in dark cobalt-blue transfer print with the rare “Washington Standing at His Tomb, Scroll in Hand” subject. Made by Enoch Wood & Sons, Burslem, Staffordshire, England, for the American market, circa 1825–1830. The pattern belongs to the remarkable group of patriotic Staffordshire wares produced in connection with the enormous American enthusiasm surrounding the Marquis de Lafayette's 1824–25 return visit to the United States.
