Proudly presented today is this magnificent Kachina sculpture, depictingMasauwu, the Death Kachina. Before humankind climbed through the Sipapu, toemerge into the Fourth World, Masauwu was the only being who lived there. Hemade a gift of the world to all humanity, as well as the gift of fire. Masauwuis the only Kachina who can appear on the mesas at any time of the year.Sometimes, he carries a small club, which can kill with a mere touch. Othertimes he brings gifts, like sacredcornmeal, or candy for children. On rare occasions he carries a bow, symbolizing his power over enemies of the Hopi.
