Original Jerry Doyle editorial/political cartoon featuring Franklin D. Roosevelt — “Tax Exempt Securities.”
Offered is an original signed editorial cartoon by Jerry Doyle (1898–1986), the prominent Philadelphia editorial cartoonist whose original political cartoons are preserved in major institutional collections, including Penn State and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Doyle was a strong supporter of Roosevelt's New Deal but was also known for using caricature to expose political and economic contradictions.
This particularly interesting cartoon depicts F.D.R. helping a strangely adult-looking “poor little rich” figure across a barrier while another figure stands nearby. A box prominently labeled “TAX EXEMPT SECURITIES” is at the center of the scene.
The caption quotes Roosevelt:
“…Consumers' taxes … fall relatively much more heavily upon the poor man than on the rich man.”
This is a historically significant quotation from Roosevelt's 1935 discussion of the tax burden. The quotation appeared in contemporary political debate concerning consumer taxes and the distribution of the tax burden.
The cartoon therefore provides an unusually specific window into the New Deal-era controversy over taxation, wealth, and tax-exempt securities. Its subject matter is consistent with Doyle's documented 1930s work for the strongly pro-New Deal Philadelphia Record.
The original also retains what appears to be a printed production caption attached beneath the drawing, an especially interesting feature for collectors of newspaper cartoon artwork. The caption is on visibly different, thinner paper from the principal artwork and appears consistent with newspaper-production material.
Size: Approximately 17" x 15"as measured.
Important points for collectors:
- Original Jerry Doyle editorial artwork, not a reproduction.
- Features Franklin D. Roosevelt and a specific 1930s tax controversy.
- Original printed caption remains attached beneath the artwork.
- Excellent example of Doyle's New Deal political/economic cartooning.
- The exact newspaper and publication date have not yet been conclusively established, so they are not represented as certain here.
