Cristobal Colon: Su Vida, Sus Viajes, Su Familia (Volume 1)
Hardcover Illustrated Book
13" x 10" x 3"
Spanish Language
This ornate late 19th-century volume by Jose Maria Asensio provides a comprehensive historical account of Christopher Columbus, his life, and his maritime explorations. Published in Barcelona circa 1891, this work was likely commissioned to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first voyage to the Americas. The book is distinguished by its elaborate chromolithographic cover designed by R. Gerhold and features numerous high-quality illustrations, including fine color plates protected by tissue guards.
• Elaborate red cloth binding with intricate gold and color stamped ship illustration
• Profusely illustrated with portraits, maps, and historical scenes including full-page plates
• Dedicated to Antonio Canovas del Castillo, a prominent Spanish statesman of the era
• Large format Volume 1 of a definitive biographical and historical series
Condition: Fair vintage condition with significant age-appropriate wear. The spine shows heavy rubbing, wear at the head and tail, and surface cracking, though the ornate gilt decoration remains visible. Cover boards exhibit edge wear and corner bumping. Internal pages show mild toning and occasional foxing consistent with age, but the binding remains intact and plates are generally clean.
