JOHN BACKUS was a member of the Connecticut General Assembly for many years.
PETER PLUMB was in the 7th Company in the Northern Department, led by General Philip Schuyler. Of George Washington’s generals, only Artemas Ward and Charles Lee ranked above Schuyler. Schuyler’s command was rife with controversy and Horatio Gates was ordered to replace him. The Northern Department was crucial for controlling transportation routes along the Hudson Rive, which was vital for supplying the American forces.
