*****Disclaimer: - I have had this checked out by a Leather Craftsman who stated this box has the hallmarks of handmade late 1800s techniques and materials. Box had been stored in a dresser drawer for years before I inherited it. As far as we can tell it matches perfectly with an authentic antique Cuir Bouilli travel case. I am not an expert therefore I am relying on a Leather Craftsmans opinion. ******
This seems to be an exceptional, museum-grade antique Victorian traveling case / pocket container, dating to the mid-19th century (circa 1850-1870). This stunning 4-inch circular box is entirely handcrafted from molded vegetable- tanning leather using the historic cuir bouilli method, yielding a remarkably rigid, rock-hard unstitched construction with zero metal parts or machine thread seams.
- The exterior showcases masterful hand-tooled decoration, featuring a patient line-by-line lattice pattern, a striking central eye/hourglass geometric emblem, and a continuous hand-stamped star-flower accent border. The bottom features a matching perimeter star border.
- The interior is flawlessly lined with its original light tan natural skiver leather hide, featuring an intact flexible leather rear hinge and a completely leather-built arrow toggle-and-loop closure mechanism in the front.
