RPPC Decorah Iowa Flood Disaster Old Emery House Railroad Crossing at Broadway Train Caught in Debris
Original real photo postcard showing a dramatic flood-disaster scene, believed to be from Decorah, Iowa, with a railroad passenger car caught among heavy flood debris near a residential/railroad area. The image shows the rail car stopped amid mud, wreckage, broken timbers, fencing, and washed-up debris, with two women standing on the rear platform and additional structures visible in the background.
The front has period marks corresponding to the handwritten notes on the reverse. The reverse appears to read:
“Old Emery House.
Railroad crossing at Broadway.
The train got caught between Broadway and next street south.
The car in foreground was occupied by Mexican woman.”
The note identifies the Old Emery House and the railroad crossing at Broadway, and explains that the train was caught between Broadway and the next street south. This is an unusually strong early flood/disaster RPPC with excellent period annotation, showing railroad interruption, residential damage, and severe debris in the aftermath of a major local flood.
A scarce and historically interesting image for collectors of Decorah, Iowa, Winneshiek County, railroad scenes, flood disasters, local history, and early real photo postcards.
The postcard has an AZO stamp box, dating the real photo postcard stock generally to the early 20th century, real photo postcard. Unused and not postally mailed. General age toning, surface wear, light spotting, and soiling. Noticeable discoloration and foxing, including staining at the upper left of the image side and toning and spotting on the reverse. Minor edge and corner wear with light handling marks. Reverse has period handwritten identification. Please see photos for full condition details.
