An exceptional WW I historical grouping Chicago, Illinois, dating to 1918. Belonging to historical figure Edward Lehmann. This collection details service as a Captain in the American Protective League (APL), a civilian organization that operated under the direction of the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Investigation (the forerunner to the FBI) to counter draft evaders, radicals, and German sympathizers during the war.
This grouping includes:
• Official APL Badge: A beautiful, aged metal shield-shaped badge reading "American Protective League - Auxiliary to U.S. Dept of Justice." It features a prominent American eagle at the top, a central shield motif, and the stamped identification number C 149.
• APL Certificate of Membership: Dated January 22, 1918, explicitly certifying the bearer holds the rank of Captain
• War Department Selective Service Registration Certificate: A filled-out draft registration card dated September 1918
And a war dept. local board notice of classification 1 dated nov 9 1918. Original Leather Tri-Fold Wallet/Holder: The vintage black leather ID wallet used to hold these documents and house the badge. The grouping is in good, untouched vintage condition, showing honest wear consistent with its 100+ year age. The documents have expected yellowing, minor creases, and minor edge tears (notably on the top of the registration certificate), but all text and handwriting remain perfectly legible. The badge shows a gorgeous, authentic patina with no major damage. The leather wallet is intact but shows wear and age. Please study the photos carefully to evaluate the exact condition.
An incredible, cohesive piece of home-front WWI espionage and law enforcement history.#lehmann #thefaire #chicagohistory
