Rare Rosenthal Porcelain Kunst-Abteilung Putti & Daisy Antique 4 7/8" Powder Box 1914-1916
ITEM DESCRIPTION
This Rare Hard To Find antique Rosenthal porcelain Putti & Daisy Powder Box is in Excellent Antique Condition with No Chips No Cracks No Crazing. Made by Rosenthal's Kunst-Abteilung (Art Department) in Selb, Bavaria, Germany, this beautiful covered box dates to approximately 1914-1916 and measures approximately 4 7/8" tall.
The round white porcelain powder box features a fitted domed lid topped with a charming three-dimensional putti figure. The seated child holds a large daisy flower between its legs, with softly modeled features and delicate hand-painted coloring in warm flesh tones and brown hair.
Adding special meaning to the design is the German script written around the body of the box:
"Er liebt mich von Herzen, mit Schmerzen"
The phrase translates into English as:
"He loves me with all his heart, so intensely it hurts."
The romantic inscription beautifully complements the daisy held by the putti, recalling the traditional flower-petal game of "He loves me, he loves me not." This combination of the putti, daisy, and romantic German verse gives the box an especially charming sentimental character.
Fine gold trim encircles both the lid and body of the box, providing an elegant accent against the white porcelain.
The underside bears the green Rosenthal Kunst-Abteilung Selb-Bavaria factory mark with the 1914-1916 date designation, firmly placing this piece within Rosenthal's early Art Department production.

Excellent Antique Condition with No Chips No Cracks No Crazing.
There is some light age-related wear to the gold trim consistent with a porcelain piece more than 100 years old.

PATTERN & DESIGN
This charming Rosenthal powder box combines romantic symbolism with the artistic porcelain work of Rosenthal's Kunst-Abteilung.
The domed lid is crowned by a seated putti holding a large daisy. The flower is particularly appropriate because the German inscription, "Er liebt mich von Herzen, mit Schmerzen," evokes the romantic tradition associated with plucking the petals from a daisy while asking whether one's sweetheart loves them.
The softly modeled putti, romantic German script, delicate coloring, white porcelain, and fine gold bands create a wonderful example of early-20th-century German sentimental porcelain.
With its clearly marked 1914-1916 Rosenthal Kunst-Abteilung backstamp, this is an especially appealing antique Rosenthal piece dating from more than a century ago.
