Discover a fascinating glimpse into early 20th-century American industry with this antique stereoview card from the renowned Keystone View Company. This stereograph, titled "13624—First Haul of the Season—Salmon Industry, Columbia River, Oregon, U. S. A.", captures a significant moment in the salmon fishing industry. The detailed 3D image depicts a group of fishermen, likely Scandinavian as mentioned in the accompanying text, gathered around a massive catch of salmon, with horses visible in the background, likely assisting with the nets. This historical stereoview provides a window into the demanding work of the salmon industry on the Columbia River in Oregon. The reverse side of the card features a descriptive text, further detailing the scene and the industry: "The fishermen who supply the Astoria canneries are mostly Scandinavians. The salmon are taken by driftnets from twenty to one hundred fathoms long. The fish wheels are not used near the mouth of the Columbia, but near the Cascades, where the river is narrow and the rapids force the fish close to the banks, where the wheels take them in enormous quantities. The meshes of the nets catch the fish at the gills and prevent their escape. Night is the best time for fishing, and the sight of the fishing fleet at sunset going out from the harbor is highly picturesque, as are also their gleaming and October. The nets are drawn in and the catch gladdens or disappoints these toilers of the sea. About the mouth of the Columbia the task of the fishermen is perilous owing to the tides and currents and winds that must be encountered. The number of salmon that ascend the Columbia seems beyond reckoning or imagining. They are found by thousands at the great falls of the Snake river, 600 miles from the sea and in Clark's Fork at a still greater distance. The small tributaries of the Columbia's tributaries swarm with salmon as late as September lights after dark. In the early morning swarm with salmon as late as September. This stereocard is a valuable piece for collectors of stereoviews, historical photography, and those interested in American industry and the Pacific Northwest.Verified Specifications:
