From America's Oldest Nail Manufacturer, this display board represents types of hand cut nails and gives a history of Tremont Nail, Co. A perfect addition to the wood shop. Cut nails are made from iron plates, unlike wrought nails, which are hammered from nail rods. Both types of nails have rectangular shanks, but cut nails only taper on two opposing sides, while wrought nails taper on all four sides.Cut nails are durable and difficult to pull out because wood fibers wedge against them, reducing loosening.Jacob Perkins patented the cut-nail process in the United States in 1795, and Joseph Dyer patented it in England, where he set up machinery in Birmingham. The process was designed to cut nails from iron sheets so that the iron fibers ran down the nails.
