Vintage 1960s–1970s Made in Japan ornamental souvenir plate, measuring approximately 8.5 inches in diameter.
This colorful period display plate features an illustrated map of Japan surrounded by iconic Japanese imagery including Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms, women in traditional kimono, pagodas, temples, castles, Buddha and regional cultural scenes.
Especially interesting is the large number of locations associated with U.S. military installations in Japan, including Misawa, Yokota, Zama, Atsugi, Yokosuka, Iwakuni, Sasebo, Kadena and others, along with Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Hokkaido, Sapporo, Chitose, Okinawa and Naha. These souvenir plates were popular with tourists and U.S. military personnel stationed in Japan during the postwar era.
Large JAPAN lettering appears across the top with 日本 (Japan) at the bottom. Finished with a bright gold-tone rim.
The reverse is marked:
“This is an ornamental – NO practical use – MADE IN JAPAN”
followed by the same warning in Japanese, identifying it specifically as a decorative display plate rather than tableware.
Fantastic pre-owned vintage condition. Colors remain exceptionally bright and vibrant, the gold-tone rim is still bright, and no chips were observed. Please review photographs carefully for exact condition.
Measures approximately 8.5” diameter.
A beautiful vintage Japanese souvenir and an especially interesting piece for collectors of Japan travel, U.S. military history, mid-century Japanese export ware or vintage souvenir plates.
