Exceptionally rare vintage Rushton Company African American Santa Claus plush doll, holding an original miniature Coca-Cola glass bottle. Marked “The Rushton Co.” on the boot sole and with the original sewn-in tag reading “The Rushton Company, Atlanta, Ga. All New Material Contents: Cotton and Expanded Styrene.”
The Coca-Cola Connection: In 1957, the Coca-Cola Company collaborated with the Ruston Toy Company to create promotional Santas. They were originally distributed directly to Coca-Cola bottling plants and sold in stores as seasonal advertisements.
Extreme Rarity of the African American Version: While the standard Caucasian Rushton Santa is relatively common in vintage markets, the African American version was produced in extremely limited quantities during the late 1950s. Finding one intact with its original small plastic Coca-Cola bottle is incredibly rare.
The Rushton Toy Company was famous for its "Star Creation" line, which pioneered hand-painted, beautifully expressive soft vinyl/rubber faces attached to plush bodies. The distinct mid-century side-glance eyes give them immense nostalgic appeal.
Features:
Vinyl Rubber face with hand-painted features.
Fur-trimmed red felt suit, white plush trim.
Cream vinyl boots, black belt with gold buckle
Holds a miniature glass Coca-Cola bottle in right hand
Marked on boot sole and body tag (see photos).
Measures 19” tall, from tip of hat to bottom of feet
Vintage wear consistent with age. There are some minor scuffs on boots and face. See pictures. Overall this is in such great condition and such a special piece of Americana.
Black Santa figures from Rushton are scarce, and this Coca-Cola advertising crossover piece is even harder to find, a strong addition to any vintage Christmas, Black Americana, or Coca-Cola collectibles collection.
