Striking vintage hand-carved wooden figure depicting a Plains-style Native American chief or warrior, acquired from the estate of collector Nicholas Mitropoulos of Edgecomb, Maine.
This is a substantial and unusually well-executed folk-art carving, standing approximately 12 inches tall including the base. The figure is carved in the round from dark-finished wood and features a detailed feather headdress, strongly modeled facial features, layered clothing or blanket treatment, and a carved object held at the chest.
The quality of the carving is what sets this piece apart. The face, headdress, garment folds and surface decoration have considerably more depth and character than the inexpensive decorative carvings commonly encountered. The dark aged finish has developed an attractive worn surface that emphasizes the carving.
This piece was obtained directly from the Nicholas Mitropoulos estate in Edgecomb, Maine, along with a varied collection of unusual ethnographic, Native American-related, Himalayan, Asian and folk-art objects.
