Striking oversized vintage Mexican folk art wall plate/platter from Tlaquepaque, Mexico. Made in 1940’s-60’s.
This impressive piece measures approximately 16 inches in diameter and 1.75 inches deep. It features a wonderfully bold hand-painted peacock-style bird surrounded by dramatic feather motifs.
The palette is especially eye-catching, with a brilliant orange ground accented in black, white and touches of yellow/olive green. The extensive fine black line work gives the design wonderful movement and a strong graphic quality.
The front is hand marked “TLAQUEPAQUE” near the rim and “PYB” within the bird design, presumably the painter’s or workshop initials. I have not been able to positively identify the artist represented by PYB.
The reverse is unglazed natural earthenware and includes a raised clay hanging point with an existing cord, indicating that the piece was intended for decorative wall display.

Condition:
Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. There are scattered surface scratches, rubbing/paint wear and areas of wear along the rim, all shown in the photographs. The back shows normal irregularities and wear associated with handmade pottery. I do not see an obvious major crack or repaired break.

A fabulous large-scale example of vintage Tlaquepaque pottery and Mexican folk art. At 16 inches across, this is a substantial decorative piece with tremendous presence on a wall.
