Complete 7-piece hand-painted wooden Russian nesting doll set from Sergiev Posad, the town where matryoshkas have been made since the early 1900s. Six dolls open, and the solid little one nests inside. Largest doll measures 6.5 inches tall.
Traditional round Zagorsk shape. Burgundy body, gold headscarf with a scalloped white border, and rosy cheeks. All seven are painted with the same flower: a stylized pink and orange bloom with green leaves on a black apron. Back of the largest is painted with blue flowers and green leaves. Base of the largest is marked in gold Cyrillic "г. С. Посад" (city of Sergiev Posad).
Interior of the largest is marked in pencil 1232. No artist name.
Heights: 6.5, about 4.75, 3.75, 2.6, 2.1, 1.6, and just under 1 inch.
Pre-owned display piece. Glossy lacquer, bright paint, seams fit. Wear and scuffs on the base. Small hole in the base is the normal lathe hole. Please see photos for condition and the town mark.
