History of this great patriot fighting unit:
The unit originally began during World War II as the 401st Bombardment Group (Heavy), activated on April 1, 1943. Stationed in Deenethorpe, England, they flew B-17 Flying Fortresses over Europe. They flew 254 combat missions with the lowest loss rate in the entire Eighth Air Force.After being deactivated post-WWII, the unit was reactivated and officially redesignated as the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing in 1957 at England Air Force Base in Alexandria, LouisianaIn April 1966, the 401st TFW permanently relocated to Torrejón AB.For nearly three decades, the wing served as a critical vanguard for NATO’s southern flank,maintaining constant alert to deter Soviet forces
