Historical Significance of the USS Torsk
• The Last Shots of WWII: On August 14, 1945, while patrolling the Sea of Japan, the Torsk fired what would be the very last torpedoes of World War II, successfully sinking two Japanese coastal defense frigates (CD-13 and CD-47). President Truman announced the Japanese surrender just hours later.
• The "Galloping Ghost of the Japanese Coast": She earned this nickname during her intense war patrols in the closing months of the war due to her ability to strike quickly and evade enemy detection.
• Launch Date: The model commemorates her launch on May 25, 1944, where she was sponsored by Mrs. Allen M. Look.
