Offering this vintage Woodings-Verona heavy-duty Broadhead Hatchet / Bench Axe, Splitting Maul with original handle and leather lanyard.
Features
• The Wedge Profile: Unlike typical, slim carpentry hatchets meant for slicing or shaving, this pattern features a massive, distinct flare from the blade edge back to the eye. That sudden wedge shape forces wood grain apart immediately upon impact—the exact mechanical design of a splitting maul.
• The Weight Class: A standard camp hatchet or half-hatchet typically sits around 1.5 to 1.8 lbs total. At 3 lbs overall, this tool is a heavyweight powerhouse. The extra weight in the head lets it carry immense kinetic energy through tough, knotty firewood rounds without getting buried or stuck.
• The Hardened Poll ( hammer end) is highly reinforced. Woodings-Verona designed these heavy models specifically to withstand the brutal shock of pounding steel or plastic felling wedges into massive logs without mushrooming out the steel head.
So while it shares the visual profile of a traditional half-hatchet, its massive 3 lb weight class and wedge geometry mean its true calling in the field is heavy-duty kindling splitting, timber framing, and wedge driving.
Measures 16 inches long, the 3lb head measures 6-1/2” long by 1-1/2” thick and the blade measures 3” tall.
Very Good Condition as shown, the handle is tight.
