This @7/8\" brass presidential campaign token or medal is from over 180 years ago, back when William Henry Harrison ran on the Whig Party ticket against President Martin van Buren, becoming the first Whig Party president elected in our history. At the time and for over a century until Ronald Reagan, he was also the oldest person to become president at age 68. Unfortunately, when he was inaugurated in Washington D.C. on March 4, 1841, his extensive inaugural address was given outside in inclement weather, and he refused to wear a topcoat or hat. Soon thereafter, he got sick and died within a month, also making for the shortest presidential term in our history.
Because of former War of 1812 hero General Harrison\'s propaganda machine, he had become known as \"The People\'s Candidate.\" His memorabilia had log cabins and hard cider barrels on them even though he was born in Virginia on a plantation. And, even if he may have resided in log cabins while Governor of The Indiana Territory, he certainly wasn\'t raised in one. While Governor, he built a 13-room plantation-style house in Vincennes, one of the first brick dwellings in that area.
He was known as \"Old Tippecanoe\" after one of his famous battles during the War of 1812. With his running mate, John Tyler on the ticket, their supporters came up with one of the best-known campaign slogans in political history: \"Tippecanoeand Tyler, too!\" Another slogan he used was \"The People\'s Choice.\" This item contends that Whig Harrison was a weightier individual than the sitting democrat President, Martin van Buren.
Ever since Harrison\'s time - and previously, with Andrew Jackson - presidential candidates have resorted to creating a myth about themselves to serve their expedient political purposes. And you thought such propaganda was all new. Wrong! It\'s part of our rich American history that makes collecting presidential items so rewarding.
