Hi! Please use the zoom feature to carefully examine item condition before purchase and consider the photos or videos to be part of the item description.

This commercial postcard from 1952 advertises imported sardines from Philippe & Canaud of Nantes, France, available in two varieties: the premium P & C Brand (with brass tag and spiced French olive oil) and the more economical Delaunay Brand (plain French olive oil). The prices listed—$47 and $21 per case, respectively—suggest these were gourmet goods intended for American distributors, promising “the discriminating taste of the gourmet.”

Adolph Goldmark & Sons Corp., listed as the sole U.S. distributor, operated at 467 Greenwich St. in New York City’s Tribeca area. The family-run firm was known for importing European specialty foods during the mid-20th century, particularly before globalization reshaped the food supply chain. The postcard serves as a rare surviving example of direct-to-business food marketing from that era, mailed to Standard Packing Corp. in Kokomo, Indiana—a meat packing and food distribution firm known regionally in the 1950s.

This piece reflects the role of mail advertising in postwar gourmet trends, particularly as international cuisine gained popularity in America’s urban centers. Nantes, France, was historically known for its sardine canning industry, which saw international expansion during the early-to-mid 20th century.
